All,

Don't forget tonight is the night of our weekly MTEARS SKYWARN ARES Training Net.  The net meets each and every Monday evening at 9:00 PM ET, 8:00 CT on the MTEARS linked repeater system.

For those of you who are new to this group - or perhaps new to amateur radio, MTEARS is the Middle Tennessee Emergency Amateur Repeater System, a system of over 30 linked UHF FM repeaters in the 70 cm. (440 MHz) amateur band, which serves the entire state of Tennessee.  Check the files area of this group for the latest system map and list of repeaters, frequencies, and CTCSS (PL) tones.  All repeaters in the system have a +5.0 MHz transmit offset.  Make sure your transceiver is set correctly before the net to assure that you can be heard by others!

Check-in is by county groups, first, counties in East Tennessee, followed by Middle Tennessee, West Tennessee, and finally by station outside of Tennessee.  PLEASE WAIT TO CHECK IN UNTIL YOUR COUNTY IS CALLED.  If you miss your county, wait for the end of the net when late stations are called.

When checking in - AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - say your COUNTY NAME TWICE, YOUR CALL SIGN, AND YOUR REPEATER ID NUMBER (found on the documents in the files area listed above).  Stations checking in for the first time will be asked to specify their call sign phonetically and likely asked to repeat their information so it can be added to our extensive log sheets. 

REMEMBER the "capture effect" on FM, meaning louder stations will override weaker ones.  You will likely hear some "doubling" during the net, especially when many stations are checking in from a county group.  The Net Control stations will make every effort to make sure all stations get the chance to check in before moving on the the next group.  If you aren't acknowledged immediately, be patient and try again!  

ALWAYS follow the directions of the Net Control Station.

It's a good idea to to check how well you can hit and hear the repeater BEFORE THE NET STARTS.  This is particularly true if you're using a handheld radio.  Speak clearly and remember to key up for TWO SECONDS before speaking so that all the repeaters in the system can link.  (The linking process is NOT instantaneous and takes more time the further away you are from Middle Tennessee. 

We always welcome new stations and stations that are interested in being trained to assist with net operations.  Make inquiries by e-mail to Laura Marler, N4CLO, <ellemarler01@...> or Stephan Anderman, K2SMA <k2sma@...> to get started.  Qualifications for Net Control Stations can also be found in the files are of this io group.

Just a reminder that we will have a great door prize at our monthly TLARC Meeting, a 20 MHz Oscilloscope with probes and manual.  This oscilloscope came from the estate of Don Hice WB5TVI-SK.  This unit is slightly used but you can see it was always handled with great care, check out the attached photo.  What better purpose for this nice piece of test equipment then to have it in the hands of another Ham.  The raffle drawing will be held at the end of the meeting, you must be present to win.

It's that time again, CQ to all you hams...

Saturday, March 12, 2022 (0900-1600 PST)... USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum (NI6IW) will be active, commemorating the launch of the USS Midway on March 20, 1945, commissioned on Sept 10th and underway on Oct 12, 1945

NI6IW will be utilizing the PAPA System for D-Star Operations from 9am to 4pm PST, which is 1700 to 2400 UTC on the following PAPA repeaters:

Reflector 012A & PAPA D-STAR repeaters

MIDWAY NI6IW will be operating on or near its normal HF frequencies of 7.250 MHz LSB, 14.320 MHz USB AND 070 PSK31 frequencies (check spotting networks for the most current information). MIDWAY NI6IW also will be operating VHF/UHF specifically seeking contacts within the PAPA System SOCAL area on PAPA repeaters at the foll0owing times PDT:

Analog FM PAPA10 Mt. Palomar.

Morning Hours: 0900

Afternoon Hours: 1300

All other operations will be primarily on D-STAR REF012A, then shifting at various times to other reflectors.

If you miss us on REF012A please check https://www.dstarusers.org/ for our call NI6IW and "Reporting Node" to see what Reflector we may be using and catch up with us there. We will QSY to various reflectors to maximize QSO's throughout the event.
