Greetings,

A system will affect the area late in the week and into the weekend, initially with showers and a few thunderstorms on Thursday, some possibly strong to severe. After the associated cold front passes through the area Thursday night, a transition to light snow showers is expected. Currently, forecast snowfall accumulations are limited to mainly the higher elevations of East Tennessee and southwest Virginia. 


Current Watches, Warnings, or Advisories:
  • None

What has changed: Confidence has increased in the potential for isolated strong to severe storms, followed by snow accumulations in the higher elevations.

Primary Hazards
  • Hazard: Isolated Strong to Severe Storms
    • What: Strong to severe storms capable of wind gusts up to 60 mph
    • Where: Mainly in southeast Tennessee and southwest North Carolina
    • When: Late Thursday morning through the afternoon 
  • Hazard: Accumulating Snowfall
    • What: Lingering rain showers changing to snow showers
    • Where: Mainly in the higher elevations of East Tennessee and southwest Virginia.
    • When: Friday morning through Friday night

Good afternoon,

A system will affect the area on Thursday with gusty winds and the potential for a line of strong to severe thunderstorms (main risk is severe wind gusts). After the associated cold front passes through the area Thursday night, a transition to light snow showers is expected with significant snow accumulations possible across the higher elevations of the mountains, generally at or above 2500 feet elevation. Lower elevation valley locations are expected to see little to no snow accumulation.

Current Watches, Warnings, or Advisories:
What has changed: Confidence has increased in the potential for embedded severe thunderstorms within a line of rain and storms on Thursday. Confidence has also increased in significant snow accumulations across the higher elevations of the mountains on Friday and Friday night.

    • What: Strong to severe storms capable of wind gusts up to 60 mph and brief, spin up tornadoes.
    • Where: Highest risk across southeast Tennessee and southwest North Carolina

  • Hazard: Accumulating Snowfall
    • What: Lingering rain showers changing to snow showers
    • Where: Mainly in the higher elevations of East Tennessee and southwest Virginia, generally at or above 2500 feet elevation.

Greetings, A one-two punch of strong thunderstorms followed by snow is expected today and tomorrow. The line of severe storms is expected to move through today with strong winds as the main threat. Overnight and on Friday accumulating snow is expected. This snowfall will be very elevation dependent... The higher your elevation the better chances to see accumulating snowfall, with the best chances at 2,500 feet and higher.

What has changed: Confidence is increasing on heavy snowfall accumulations in the Appalachian Mountains, mainly above 2,500 feet. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect.
